Functional Medicine

In 2019, Dr. Willetts became one of only 1200 doctors in the world to be certified by the Institute for Functional Medicine, the world leader in functional medicine education. This rigorous training program includes about 2 years of coursework, as well as a case report and written examination.

Functional medicine asks, ‘why?’ If your energy is low, your hormones are out of balance, or your gut isn’t working properly, we’ll dig deeper into the underlying causes to help you truly heal. This approach is known as “systems biology,” which means it’s holistic. For example, for a chronic skin issue, we might actually look to your gut to discover why your body is inflamed. Functional medicine looks at the whole person. Advanced laboratory testing and nutraceutical supplements, as well as lifestyle modification (working on your eating, movement, stress management and sleep) will offer you a new approach to addressing your health concerns. Every treatment is tailored to each individual person’s needs.

Dr. Willetts can help you to get the most out of your supplements (“micro nutrition”) and, when needed, advise you about which foods may be helpful to include or exclude from your diet (“macro nutrition”). She can also help you with:

  • Digestive problems
  • Mood and energy issues
  • Pain, such as headaches or joint pain
  • Hormone imbalance (painful periods, PMS, menopausal symptoms, etc.)

Dr. Willetts will take a detailed history, consult with you at length about any symptoms you might be experiencing, and order at-home blood and saliva lab tests as needed in order to determine the protocol that’s right for you.

Using salivary hormone tests, Dr. Willetts can also assess the balance of both stress-handling and female hormones. With the information provided by such tests, Dr. Willetts can customize an herbal and nutritional supplement plan (in conjunction with lifestyle changes) to aid your body in improving its natural balance.
